However this article and articles like it really irritate me because the Satmar are not really typical of Hassidim and they certainly are not the norm for Orthodox Jews. The article just keeps saying "Hassidic Jews" and "Orthodox" as though they are all like this. It's just not true. The Lubavitchers are fairly friendly to outsiders and there are various Hassidic communities that are more relaxed. Modern Orthodox Jews are nothing like this. Women are a huge part of the Modern Orthodix community and religion and while they follow some rules for themselves ( ie. men and women can't hold hands) they are lenient about the rules for their and they don't expect outsiders or other Jews to follow their rules at all. The Satmar are very tightly controlled by this one family and because Williamsburg is becoming gentrified the newfound real estate wealth in the community is only likely to increase the hold the brothers exert on people financially and personally. IMO the closed off, theocratic nature of this particular sect is based at least as much on cult-like financial motives as it is on religion.
